About Peter’s Perfect Pickles

I love a good pickle. I hope that you do too.

Many moons ago I went to the US for the first time. I was travelling with my girlfriend — now wife — to visit her family. We drove to Virginia, and it was there that I sampled my first-ever bread and butter pickle. It had been made by her nana, a formidable person and excellent cook. I was smitten and have spent years trying to recreate that first taste. It’s become the search for the perfect pickle!

Over time I’ve visited more places that have driven my pursuit of condiment perfection. Inspired by the world, they’re all made by me at home in North Devon.

Bread & Butter Pickles
Where my pickle adventure began. People love these sweet, crunchy cucumber treats straight out of the jar, but they’re good in sandwiches, on a burger, with a plate of barbecue or crowning cheese on a cracker.

Cowboy Candy
A stint working in Texas took my pepper appreciation to new heights. These pickled red chillies give your taste buds a little tickle. Bringing joy no matter what the meal, they’re sensational on top of a pizza, as a garnish on a grain bowl or to add colour to anything you fancy.

Salsa Macha
I love the Pacific coast of Mexico for the cuisine and the surf — in that order. This is my riff on the region’s nutty, spicy chilli oil that uses garlic, peanuts, seeds and a variety of chillies to build flavour from the ground up. Phenomenal with eggs, cheese, meat or vegetables.

FAQ

Are these a good gift?

Heck yes, everybody loves receiving something that is a little unique. If the person that you’re buying for loves hot food then Cowboy Candy will fit the bill. Should they prefer something a little cooler then Bread & Butter should fit or if they love the flavours of Mexico then go for Salsa Macha. If you’re buying for someone who just loves to eat everything then one of each!

Why are Bread & Butter pickles called that?

There are a few origin stories for the name Bread & Butter pickles, the most common answer is that during the Great Depression in the late 1920s and 1930s money was tight and people would make cheap sandwiches using bread, butter and sweet tangy cucumber pickles. They’ve also been used to barter for staple food items like bread and butter.
